Jay’s six life rules:
1. Be Your Own Biggest Fan
2. Take Control, Then Let It Go
3. Focus on The Process, Not The Result
4. Never Act On Your Fears
5. Use Money The Right Way
6. Don’t Stop Growing

Jay-Z, photographed by Todd Plitt for USA Today in 2010.
USA Today: “There are a number of stylish photos in Jay-Z’s office at the Midtown headquarters of his entertainment firm, Roc Nation. Prominent among them is a black-and-white shot of Muhammad Ali as a young man in a dapper hat and suit, looking more like a vintage Brooks Brothers model than a champion prizefighter.
“That’s why I thought it was such a beautiful picture,” Jay-Z says. “You usually see photos of him with no shirt, just boxing shoes and shorts. But there he is, dressed to the nines.”

Jay-Z, shot by Michael Lavine for the cover of XXL magazine in August 2009.
“XXL called me at the end of July and asked if I could shoot Jay-Z for their cover the week of August 12th. On Monday the 10th we still didnt know when Jay was turning up for the shoot. We held Wednesday, but they were trying to push it to Thursday. On Tuesday, I called XXL and said “Are we shooting this tomorrow or not?”. By Tuesday evening we called off the shoot and cancelled all our holds. Then at 10:39pm my cellphone rings. Jay wanted to shoot tomorrow, at 2pm. The next morning, the shoot got pushed to 3pm. Then 4, then 5, then 6pm. At 6pm we were told that Jay-Z was coming at 7 and that we would get 10 minutes with him. Believe it or not, Jay-Z actually showed up “on time” at 7pm. And fortunately for us he loved all the setups we had ready and he ended up staying with us for a whole hour. Jay-Z is a very nice guy!”
- Michael Lavine, with a firsthand account of just how busy Jay-Z really is.
